Eurasian Wolf- Finland

During this photo tour we visit the no man's land between the Finnish-Russian border to focus on photographing eurasian wolves. This is a location that offers one of the best opportunities in the world to photograph eurasian wolves from a hides. In the no man's land along the border between Finland and Russia, wolves have long found a protected zone and have been allowed to live relatively undisturbed, which has led to that wolves are a permanent natural part of the fauna in this area. The hides at this place has long been used to offer opportunities to photograph brown bears, over the years however the hiding place has also attracted wolves who are normally often very shy and difficult to get close to. Now the wolves have become habituateed to the hides over several generations so that just like the bears they regularly visit the hides and the carrion placeds there. However, wolves are usually a little more uncertain to see at the hides each and every day, but if you stay for a few days the chance is very good to get great photo opportunities on wolves. During late autumn bears staring to hibernate and the wolves take over the scene. The wolves winter coat is getting thick this time of the year and they look even more impressive. The wolf pups of the year is now almost as big as the adults and the start to gather as a pack so there is a good chance to observe several animals together. winter is also coming and there is a change of getting fresh snow on the grow which makes it ideal for stunning wintery wolf images. If lucky there is sometimes also wolverine visiting at the hide location.

There are several different operators and hides along the border in this area and we will be visiting multiple spots with the possibility of rotating for variety of images. You usually sit 2 or 4 people in one hide, there may also be an opportunity to sit alone. We sit in the hide from late afternoon until it is too dark to photograph, which is about 4-5 hours in late autumn. If you want, you can also sleep in some hides with a chance to hear the wolves howl during the night. Otherwise, overnight stays are done at the wilderness campsite which is close to the hides. Meals are served here and there is also the possibility of taking a traditional Finnish sauna in the evening.

The tour is led by biologist Christopher Wiken, who has photographed and led wolf photography tours at many locations globally, in Alaska, Canada and Spain amongst others.

Wolves are generally not the easiest animals to photograph due to their natural shyness, but with a little luck and patience, there is a good chance of success. One can not expect to get to photograph them at close range but within at least a fair range with a tele lens of at least 500 mm. Just to get to view them in their natural enviroment is a thrue privilage. We will mainly stay within the Picos de Europa National Park, a place that is surralistic beautiful. Within the park there is also a great diversity of wildlife, in addition to wolves there is also Iberian brown bears, European wildcats, Iberian ibex and the Cantabrian chamois. The birdlife is also rich with vultures such as the griffon vulture, bearded vultures sometimes golden eagles can also be seen. In addition to wildlife, there are also beautiful mountain villages with a rich cultural history that we will also get to experience as we will stop by in some of these villages. People have been living in these areas and farmed the land and had domesticated animals in the valleys for thousands of years, many still live here just as they have done for many generations. We travel with small groups with a maximum of 6 participants per group, this is to minimize disturbance and also make us as a group more flexible to be able to quickly move to different spots and positions to get good photo opportunities.
